DMH implements new treatment for excessive menstrual bleeding
Decatur Memorial Hospital recently announced it has selected the NovaSure™ System as its endometrial ablation treatment of choice for women suffering from excessive menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) due to benign causes. Menorrhagia is often a debilitating condition that affects 10 million women and accounts for approximately 30 percent of the estimated 600,000 hysterectomies performed in the United States each year.
Currently, one in five women suffer from excessive menstrual bleeding. This debilitating condition causes women to suffer from fatigue, anemia and emotional distress. Hysterectomy, an invasive procedure in which the women’s uterus is entirely removed while under general anesthesia, is the most common surgical treatment. The NovaSure ™ System provides women and physicians with an effective and minimally invasive outpatient alternative to a hysterectomy.
"The NovaSure System offers women a safe, fast and reliable form of treatment for excessive menstrual bleeding," said Derin Rominger, MD, of Decatur OB/GYN Associates. "We are committed to offering patients the best treatments and technologies available. We reviewed and compared this new technology to all other currently available global endometrial ablation modalities and strongly believe that NovaSure offers the best solution for women suffering from this incapacitating condition."
The NovaSure ™ System is designed to reduce and ideally eliminate excessive
menstrual bleeding by removing, or ablating, the endometrial lining of the uterus using radio frequency energy. Since the treatment is done on an outpatient basis, the patient is generally awake during the procedure. The entire procedure takes approximately 4½ minutes, making it the fastest procedure available on the market today.
