Merci Retrieval System Reaches Stroke Milestone

June 17, 2009...The clot removal system used to treat stroke patients at Decatur Memorial Hospital has reached a milestone in the stroke care community.

Concentric Medical, Inc., the global leader in devices for clot removal in ischemic stroke patients, has announced that the company’s Merci Retrieval System has been used in over 10,000 patients worldwide since its launch in August 2004. DMH began using this system in October of 2006.

The Merci Retrieval System is a catheter-based medical device that is used by 300 of the most advanced stroke centers worldwide, including Decatur Memorial Hospital’s Brain and Stroke Center. This device is used to remove blood clots from patients suffering an ischemic stroke.

Baljit Deol, M.D., Neurointerventional Radiologist and Director of the DMH Interventional Radiology Institute, has treated stroke patients for several years and knows how effective the Merci Retrieval System can be. “The Merci Retrieval System has been successful in restoring blood flow to the brain in many of our patients here at DMH, helping to prevent the potentially fatal effects of a stroke,” said Deol. “In fact, this system has allowed several of our patients to have a complete resolution of their stroke.”

Concentric Medical’s President and Chief Executive Officer Maria Sainz believes the next important milestone will be to drive broad global adoption. “We are at the forefront of change in interventional stroke care,” said Sainz. “Concentric Medical is committed to bringing forward advancements in stroke intervention through ongoing clinical study and product innovation to broaden the reach of this breakthrough technology to stroke patients.”
