DMH Hospice gives family a cuddly memento
When loved ones die, certain articles of their clothing—a worn flannel shirt, a fancy blouse or a sweatshirt embroidered with a favorite sports team logo—may become special treasures to their family.
“Clothing is very personal and helps tell a story about the person who wore it,” says Leslie Roberts, DMH Hospice.
To help with the grieving process, these special clothing items can be made into unique mementos for family members participating in a grief class coordinated by DMH Hospice.
“As a special keepsake at the end of the class, we give the family a teddy bear made from the fabric of their loved one’s clothing,” says Roberts, noting that the family chooses which clothing piece to use and is given any remaining material.
Roberts got the idea for the bears at a conference she attended last year. The idea became a reality when she recently found someone locally who was willing to make the bears. The bears cost $15 each and are paid through the Hospice donation fund.
Each bear is about a foot tall and is a one-of-a-kind creation with many special details that give each its own special charm and character.
“Teddy bears have always given comfort to people no matter what age, so we hope these bears bring comfort and fond memories for our families,” explains Leslie.
