Decatur Memorial Hospital Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month With A Month Of Breast Cancer Is For The Birds Pink Flamingos

September 18, 2009…Join Decatur Memorial Hospital in recognizing October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a variety of events. During the month of October, join the cause by proudly displaying a “Breast Cancer is for the Birds” plastic pink flamingo at your home or office. By displaying these flamingos, you will show your support for breast cancer awareness.

Pink flamingos are available for a $15 donation at these area locations: Bellesera; Bizou; Blocks; Del’s Popcorn Shop; DMH Gift Shop; DMH Women’s Health & Breast Center; Forsyth Imaging Center; Fox’s Den; Giggles; Haines & Essick; It’s a Girl Thing; Merle Norman; Millikin Bookstore; Robbies; Shop on Main; South Shores Imaging Center; and Tournesol.

All proceeds benefit the DMH Cancer Care Institute Breast Cancer Research program.

On Friday, Oct. 16, from 7 to 9 a.m., DMH is sponsoring the “Early Detection Connection.” Participants will drive through two separate locations to receive information regarding the early detection of breast cancer, a free muffin from the Coffee Connection and a gift, while supplies last. Plastic pink flamingos will be available for a $15 donation. Locations include the new Cancer Care Center of Decatur, at 210 W. McKinley Ave., and DMH South Shores Imaging at 1689 S. Franklin St. Rd.

On Thursday, Oct. 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. DMH Spirit of Women will host a seminar at Center Stage, Hickory Point Mall. At 6 p.m., Maria Perdekamp, MD, Medical Oncologist, will speak about breast cancer. Several screenings will be offered including: mammograms, derma scan machine that measures sun damage on faces; blood pressure screenings, cardiac risk assessment; pulmonary artery disease screening, body fat analysis; hand strength analysis; body mass index assessment; bone density assessment; bone density and breast cancer risk assessment.
